Don't overlook the details - read the fine print in promotional
offerings for phone and Internet service in Monticello.
Have you read the newspaper ads lately or noticed inserts or postcards in your mailbox
with a promotion of lower prices on your phone, Internet or Cable TV services?
When you read about unusually good deals or lower pricing – think about the fact that this could very well be evidence of the success of FiberNet Monticello coming to your community! On September 18, 2007 the residents of the City of Monticello approved a telephone referendum by 74%. This means the City can offer telephone service over a fiber optic network along with Internet and cable TV.
REMINDER: The City determined it would only go into the business of providing these services if it did not raise taxes. The City will be obtaining revenue bonds which will be sold to private investors to build the infrastructure for the city-wide fiber optic network and start its own telecommunications business. There will be no taxes involved with this project. The City also plans to offer services at a lower price than current providers. |
The referendum passed and the word is out – the City will be offering services through an enterprise operation named: FiberNet Monticello. This is also bringing price reductions through competition even before the fiber optic network business operated by the City opens its doors. You'll see promotional advertisements for lower pricing from current providers but don't overlook the details – read the fine print in those ads to discover what you will really pay. Look for these details in the fine print . . .
-
SHORT TERM PRICING OFFERS: Special pricing ends after 3 months (or 6 months) at which time regular/standard rates apply.
-
LONG TERM CONTRACTS: Check to see if you will be required to sign a contract for 18 months or even 24 months in order to receive the special pricing. The lower prices may be short term and the regular/standard pricing that kicks in later is long term.
-
EARLY TERMINATION FEE: If a customer does not keep service for the contracted time there may be an early termination fee of $200, $300 or more.
Be sure to ask for the details of any promotional offer you see.
Residents of Monticello can wait for "the real deal, when FiberNet Monticello¹s 100% fiber optic network is operational (possible first customers could take service by spring 2009 and widely available by summer 2009).
However, should you be contacted, ask for the promotional deal from current providers on a 12 month contract instead of 18 or 24 months. And wait and see if they call back. Perhaps you can get the same deal for less contract time? Talk to your friends and family and forward this message to them, so that they know they could benefit from paying attention to the fine print in promotional offers in the coming months.
The City of Monticello residents have shown their approval with a 74% vote of “yes”
at the recent telephone referendum held on September 18.
As a community, we can celebrate the effectiveness of the competition FiberNet Monticello has already provided. You can wait until the community can enjoy "full" competition, a broader range of better services, faster Internet speeds and the "real deal" which is a community operated 100% fiber optic network to every home and business in Monticello City limits.
